The 1890’s crash brought economic recession and by 1906 more than 50 of the existing breweries had closed.  To help cut costs in the face of these hard times, the Carlton Brewery and the Foster’s Brewing Company amalgamated with four other breweries in 1907 to form Carlton and United Breweries.
